but All AHS class years are encouraged and welcome. We would love to see representatives from
every class.

EVERY year is invited to attend, there is always a strong mid 70s to early 80s classes showing, but the younger
classes have discovered us too! We need the 50's and 60's and early 70's AHS Alumni to discover this
great get-together.

The 2011 Ames High School Alumni Holiday Gathering / Reunion night will be Friday evening, December
30, 2011 at Olde Main Brewing Co. in downtown Ames. We basically take over the place. It's so simple. We set the date. You
show up, buy your own food or drinks, and, if you're a big spender, for your friends. Then drink up (in moderation of
course), chat, and get caught up. This has been a meaningful, wonderful reconnection for many people, and we've had
classmates from New York, California, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and elsewhere attend. The holiday gathering got
off the ground 17 years ago, in a small way and mostly involving the AHS Class of '77, but has
become much more. "We started out with about 30 people a year, but in the last couple of years, this has really taken off,"
Beeman said. "I rely heavily on the this alumni site for email addresses - and beg people to update theirs -- and that helps.
What really got this going, though, is the simple act of friends letting their friends know about it through personal email
address books and phone calls. The alumni newsletter and the website also carry notices.
Why?
The idea for an informal All Classes AHS reunion came out of years of discussions among Perry
Beeman, Julie (Anderson) Larson, Bill Nutty (all 3 from the AHS Class of '77) and others. The
thought was to catch people while they were back in town for the holidays, and to have an informal, relaxing, annual fun
gathering (i.e. reunion) for those of us who hate to wait five years for our own class gatherings to roll around. Finally,
the trio of big talkers backed it up by actually planning an event.

The All Class AHS Holiday Gathering is normally held the Friday between Christmas and New Year's. If
the holidays hit that day (like it did in 2009 and again in 2010) we will pick a different date, but this year it falls
nicely between the two major holidays so we have scheduled the gathering for Friday December 30, 2011. Please help get the
word out. Every year, we have hurt feelings because someone didn't didn't know about it. The more emails and phone calls, the
better.
Stats:
Details: Just like last year! Lots and lots of fun and reminiscing and catching up and meeting new AHS Alum. Plus, you see your friends from other classes who you normally don't see at your own AHS
class reunion because this is an ALL Class AHS gathering. About 100 AHS Alumni turned out for the 2006 AHS Holiday event, and a record 110 turned
out
in 2007 from the AHS classes of 1967 to 2003. Some scholars think it might have even been more. The
foggy weather caused attendance to drop to 50 in 2008, there was a good turnout in 2009, 2010 wasn't the largest turnout we
have ever had, but there was a respectible showing of about 60 AHS Alumni in 2010. Perry says a lot
of younger classes are showing up now too and it is harder for him to know who the AHS grads are, so
maybe it was more than 60 in 2010.

The Reunion was a great time for all that attended! Below is a summary of the AHS 1976
Reunion events from the 1976 AHS Reunion Committee dated 8-5-2011
Ames High School class of 76 reunion held July 29-30 in Ames was wildly successful. The festivities began Friday night at DG's Tap on Main Street.
Well over 100 people attended this very informal gathering with 25 or more folks closing the joint down at 2:00 a.m.
A smaller, though no less enthusiastic, group met at Ames High School the next morning at 11:00 as Bill Ripp
from the Alumni Association and Ann Arbuckle, Executive Director of the Ames Education Foundation, lead us on a tour of our alma mater. Though the rail in the
main lobby was still there it sure did not feel as comfortable to sit on as it did 35 years ago.
Everyone was impressed with the facility and could not believe how much it had changed and grown over the years. Mr. Ripp's memory
was razor sharp as he updated us on old homeroom teachers and funny stories he had gathered over the years.
We held an afternoon picnic at Brookside Park for graduates and their families. We served hamburgers and all the fixin's with a
variety of games and activities for everyone to play. Jeff Cardella brought his stereo so we could have 70's music playing in the background.
The highlight of the weekend was our dinner/program on Saturday night at the Hilton Garden Inn. The place was packed as everyone
enjoyed a social hour before sitting down to a delicious meal. Before all the "old folks" could retire after dinner, the
committee pulled out all the stops for an outstanding program that included a presentation by Kathy Svec (class of 66) and the
Ames Historical Society that generated a lot of audience participation. The group howled with laughter at pictures of Ames in the
70's including Bee Vees, Kings Food Host, Sambos, Dog and Suds and the A&W Root Beer stands. Kathy could barely be heard over the
laughter and comments the slide show provoked.
Next Jamie Simons and Ed Beaudry entertained the group with a hilarious skit entitled the Love of Chocolate. Next it was
John Crawford and Barb Ellis-Holm turn to entertain us with a 70's music trivia contest that got several classmates singing and
dancing as they answered questions for lottery ticket prizes. A special thanks goes out to John who's local printing company
Alpha Copies supplied all our printer and banner needs.
Marsha Read-Olinghouse kept the fun going as she recited a poem about How We Don't Look Good Naked Anymore. It was pointed
out that in high school we used to "skinny dip" and now we "chucky dunk".
Kevin Buck finished the evening's program with a monologue recapping 35 years and how we have grown and matured to become
comfortable with who we are and with each other. Kevin had observed during the reunion how little conversation revolved around
work and instead focused on what made us happy outside our careers. Just like in high school, before the days of Facebook, Twitter,
smart phones and video streaming, all we had was each other. And that was good enough on cold winter nights or a warm summer
evening in Ames, Iowa 35 years later.

Hi all! Just wanted to provide a few more details, so you know we are still out here! Our 1991 AHS
reunion was held July 15-16, 2011 in Ames. We hung out at Olde Main in downtown Ames on Friday evening,
toured Ames High School Saturday a.m. followed by a family picnic at Inis Grove, and then the main
event on Saturday evening at Gateway Hotel. We are working on pricing details now, and will hopefully have registration information
available soon. Just wanted to let you know a bit about what will be going on as I know people are probably starting to
plans summer vacations, etc. I hope I saw you at the Reunion!
