Jeffrey Zaslow's, New York Times bestselling author, 2009 bestselling book The Girls from Ames

chronicles the 40+ years of friendship of 11 young girls from Ames (AHS Ames High School Class of 1981) and the 10 women they became. It is a moving tribute to the power of female friendship, and is a testament to the enduring deep bonds of women as they experience life's challenges and the power of friendship to overcome even the most daunting odds.

The ten 1981 AHS girls from Ames are Marilyn, Karla, Kelly, Jane, Diana, Cathy, Sally, Karen, Jenny, and Angela.

Sheila M. Walsh Memorial Scholarship

One of the 11 friends, Sheila Walsh, died in Chicago when she was 22. As a tribute to their friendship the girls from Ames have created a Scholarship in memory of Sheila. The Sheila M. Walsh Memorial Scholarship will give a female Ames High School student $1,000 toward their higher education. The focus of the Scholarship is on friendships and each applicant must describe the qualities they look for in a best friend and what their best friends mean to them.

In the too-short 22 years of Sheila's life, she touched everyone she met with her infectious laugh, her vivacity, and her innate sweetness. Sheila's girlfriends hope her legacy will live on through the young women chosen for this scholarship. ~The girls from Ames ~

The scholarship fund was begun with a donation from Jeffrey Zaslow. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of this book will also fund this Scholarship.
