Legg and Clinton are Honorary Alumni

Bud Legg and Wayne Clinton were honored as Ames High School Alumni Association Honorary Alumni.

During the last Ames High School home basketball game of the season in February, Bud Legg and Wayne Clinton were named as AHSAA Honorary Alumni. Thank you to both for many years of AHS dedication!

Bud Legg came to Ames in the Fall of 1976. He began teaching social studies and coaching girls' basketball and girls' track.

Legg guided Ames to its first ever Girls' State Basketball Tournament appearances in 1978 and 1979, and their first ever conference championships in 1979 and 1980. Retiring after the 1984 season, he had over 100 career victories at AHS. As a softball coach he developed AHS into a solid contender and retired in 1987 with 225 Little Cyclone victories.

Legg has worn many "hats" at Ames High School including guidance counselor, Senior Senate Advisor, AHS newsletter editor, Assistant Boys' Basketball Coach, Associate Principal and Athletic Director. He has been inducted in the Iowa High School Coaches Hall of Fame, the Iowa Officials Hall of Fame and the Ames High Athletic Hall of Fame. Athletics may have overshadowed the fact that he is a real student advocate, counseling and encouraging many to reach for high goals in school and life. At the end of this school year, Legg will retire from Ames High School after 26 years.

Wayne Clinton taught in the Ames School District for 34 years. During this time he taught social studies at the middle school and assisted with many sports at the high school and at the middle school. He has been recognized for excellence in teaching and the personal and nurturing approach he takes with students, inspiring them to be all they can be. He has generated interest and enthusiasm for special events like Martin Luther King Day and History Day competitions.

In sports, Clinton started the Ames High Girls' Softball program and coached within the program for 25 years, assisted Jim Duea with Girls' Track and coached the Ames High Boys' Basketball team to a state championship in 1991. His 143 career wins ranks second among all Ames coaches.

Last spring Clinton retired from teaching, but not from public service. In November he was elected to the Story County Board of Supervisors.
